A4988 is a complete micro stepper motor driver with a built-in converter for easy operation. This product can operate bipolar stepper motors in full, half, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16 step modes, with output driving performance up to 16V and ± 1A. Generally used with 12V, A4988 includes a fixed turn off time current regulator that can operate in slow or mixed decay mode. The converter is the key to easy implementation of A4988. As long as a pulse is inputted into the "stepper" input, the motor can be driven to generate microsteps. No need for phase sequence tables, high-frequency control lines, or complex interface programming. The A4988 interface is very suitable for complex applications where microprocessors are unavailable or overloaded.

During micro step operation, the chopper control within A4988 can automatically select the current attenuation mode (slow or mixed). In mixed decay mode, the device is initially set to rapidly decay within a fixed portion of the downtime, and then slowly decay for the remaining downtime. The mixed attenuation current control scheme can reduce audible motor noise, increase step progress, and reduce power consumption. Provide internal synchronous rectification control circuit to improve power consumption during pulse width modulation (PWM) operation. Internal circuit protection includes: overheat shutdown with hysteresis, undervoltage lockout (UVLO), and cross current protection. No special power on sorting is required.
